Der gemeinsame Konferenz “Interaktive Kulturen” mit “Mensch & Computer”, “DeLFI” (Deutsche eLearning Fachtagung Informatik?), “UPA” (Usability Praxis) und “Entertainment Interfaces” findet vom 12.-15.9. i Duisburg statt. Studenten können für 40 € Tagungsgebühr teilnehmen!

Is Java still a foreign language for you? You can maybe order a beer,
but can’t ask for directions yet? You are motivated to improve yourself
but would rather not take the challenge on your own? Don’t look any longer,
Summer Code Camp 2010 is near – a whole week just about enhancing you
coding skills in Java. To participate, just “come as you are!”

What you can expect

5 challenging days of coding – Starting each day with some finger exercises we will end up with the “Exercise-of-the-day” – smoking heads are guaranteed!
A cozy and easy atmosphere – You can eat, drink, code but bring your
own laptop!
Help, if you get stuck on a problem – There will always be at least
one super-friendly tutor to enlighten you!

What you will need

You will have to bring your own laptop with you with an installed Java development environment (e.g. Eclipse) or BlueJ. If you don’t have Eclipse or BlueJ– we’ll work on it.

Inspiriert durch das präzise System der Katalogisie‐rung der berühmtesten Bibliothek der Antike geht das Forschungsprojekt Alexandria durch neuartige Navigations‐, Visualisierungs‐ und Interaktionsmöglichkeiten neue Wege bei der Erschließung des Wissens im Internet. Neofonie entwickelt dabei in Kooperation mit Siemens IT Solutions and Services, C‐LAB, Siemens Corporate Technology und der Deutschen Nationalbibliothek semantische Technologien, die es ermöglichen, auch große Datenmengen zu verarbeiten und sinnvoll miteinander zu verknüpfen.

• Automatische Extraktion von Wissen aus dem Web 2.0
• Eingabe von Fragen und neuen Fakten in natürlicher Sprache
• Visuelle und interaktive Darstellung des Wissennetzwerks
• Automatische Vernetzung von Fragenden und anderen Nutzern mit Expertenwissen
• Mobiler historischer Stadtführer

Code Camp March 2010 at campus Wilhelminenhof – Take a seat, improve yourself in Java!

Is Java an island with high cliffs on a rough sea for you? Are you looking for a place to start, but would rather not sail alone? Don’t look any longer, Code Camp 2010 is near – a whole week about improving you coding skills in Java. To participate, just “come as you are!”

IMI has an exchange program with the Swedish University of Linköping’s VITA department (Visual Information Technology Applications). Four IMIs have studied there a semester, and a professor of Computer Graphics from Linköping has been in Berlin many times. Prof. Weber-Wulff was up teaching for a few days in March in the middle of a very snowy winter. The campus in Norrköping is in an old industrial building right on the water – just like Oberschöneweide!
The students study in half-semesters. They have two courses á 6 credits each half-semester and one course á 6 credits that goes over the entire semester. They have a Bachelor’s program in Media and Communication Engineering and Master’s programs in Advanced Computer Graphics (which is taught in English) and Media Technology and Engineering. They do a lot of work with 3D and are in the process of completing a dome for 3D exploration. Prof. Weber-Wulff was given a 3D tour of the building and then taken to the edges of outer space – pretty wild!

Studenten des zweiten und dritten Semesters der Studiengänge Internationale Medieninformatik, Kommunikationsdesign und Wirtschaftskommunikation haben in den letzten zwei Monaten zusammen eine neue Website für den Deutschen Preis für Wirtschaftskommunikation konzipiert, gestaltet und umgesetzt.
Bereits zum zehnten Mal zeichnet das studentische Projekt der HTW die besten Kommunikationskonzepte deutscher Unternehmen aus.
Der neue Auftritt im Netz ist seit Anfang Februar online.

21 IMI students in the first semester and 4 FIW students in the first semester gathered on January 9, 2010 with programming teachers Ilse Schmiedecke and Debora Weber-Wulff for some “just-for-fun” programming. We did the DiveLog exercise, some completed it, some got the first stage working, others decided to work on their homework for the week and asked a gazillion questions. The general feeling was: we need more of these kinds of meet-ups!

Sindy Ruppik, IMI Diplom student who finished her thesis “Eine Applikation für ein Circular Tabletop Interface” in 2006 in cooperation with the FH Johanneum, Graz, Austria, is now displaying the game, called Luftikus, in a third museum. It was on display 2007 in the Austrian children’s museum FRida&freD, and then for 5 months in Trinidad. It can now be seen in the Hygiene Museum in Dresden until January 3, 2010.

The Berliner Zeitung reports October 12, 2009 on the Independent Production project that an IMI Master’s student, Kai Noack, did:

“Während andere Studenten über Büchern hocken und für Klausuren pauken, bereichert Kai Kajus Noack mit seinen Ideen das Internet. Er hat eine Erste-Hilfe-Software fürs Handy programmiert, mit der man etwa bei Unfällen sofort weiß, was zu tun ist, und die man sich kostenlos unter www.firstai.de herunterladen kann. Außerdem hilft der junge Unternehmer Schülern mit Online-Tutorien.”

The film from 2006 about Joseph Weizenbaum, called “Rebel at Work”, will be shown on Monday, September 21, 2009 at 18.00 in room 1a of the “Silberlaube” at the FU Berlin in Dahlem. The film makers, Peter Haas, Silvia Holzinger, will be available after the showing for discussion.

There is also an exhibition at the FU Berlin on “Abenteuer Informatik – Informatik Begreifen” from September 20-25, 2009 that is part of the GI conference on computing and education.

The last class! In the winter term of 2004 six of these seven students were part of our first group of IMI bachelor students. And now, five years later, the very last class – the master seminar in which we worked hard on scientific writing (and CV writing!) – with Prof. Weber-Wulff, who also taught Informatik 1 to this group, is over. School’s out for good! Now they “just” have to finish up their thesis work and pass the oral exams.
